Phase 1 Geoenvironmental Desk Top Study and Detailed Coal Mining Risk Assessment
Stanley, County Durham
Proposed major housing development of a 15.4ha former brownfield site previously developed with a large battery factory with numerous large sheds, road infrastructure, numerous above ground storage tanks and electricity sub stations.
Site walkover survey revealed previous factory had been fed from development platforms using traditional cut and fill techniques exposing sandstone bedrock to the west with a thick wedge of fill material placed to the east, including culverting of a watercourse. Localised evidence of settlement and heave of remnant floor slabs was noted where underlying fill materials are expected to be potentially expansive shale.
Shallow mining risks were proven down the western third where two mine entries are recorded requiring further investigation.
Extensive remnant floor slabs over former factory areas with settlement of slabs evident
