Touring & Residential Park – Northern England 2022-2024
Dr Richardson was appointed as a Joint Expert to resolve a dispute over a failed concrete base beneath a residential lodge. The base, built in 2006 on uncontrolled fill, failed by 2014, causing excessive movement and tilting of the lodge and distress for the owners. The base broke into three pieces, losing support and twisting the lodge. Dr Richardson’s investigation found that over-steepened, unprepared fill and a nearby deep excavation for a sewage tank caused slope failure and differential settlement under the lodge base. The court sided with the tenants and ordered the landowner to repair the field slope and reconstruct the lodge base, subject to Dr Richardson’s design and construction supervision.
Dispute of Specification for Aggregate used in Concrete Block Manufacture – Ireland 2024
Dr Richardson was engaged as an Expert Geologist, Engineering Geologist and Geotechnical Engineer by solicitors representing six quarries barred from supplying aggregate for concrete blocks after the County Council tightened specifications due to block failures in 1990s social housing. His review focused on aggregate mineralogy and whether the new specification, aligned with EU and British Standards, was suitable. Notably, the council specification favoured a sole supplier and lacked transparency about the approved criteria.
Dr Richardson’s desk-based assessment of technical documents and research led him to argue at a meeting with the council and their lawyers that most tightened parameters were unwarranted and not supported by evidence. Following negotiations, the specification was revised, allowing affected suppliers to resume supply, and the matter was settled out of court.
Leisure/Fishing Pond Boundary Stability and Pollution Dispute – Northern England 2025
Dr Richardson was appointed by the claimant’s solicitor as an Expert Geotechnical Engineer to review alleged damage from a new retaining wall built by an adjacent landowner. The wall bordered the claimant’s fishing pond, replacing an old timber structure that had deteriorated and partly collapsed. Dr Richardson evaluated whether the new wall was properly constructed, fit for purpose, affected water flow or drainage, increased flood risk, or had caused pollution via the defendant’s new septic tank. He conducted a records review, site inspection, and independent interviews with both parties. He found the new wall’s design life was 12–22 years, it did not increase water flows or flood risk, and the septic tank was not polluting the pond. The case is ongoing.
